MAJ402. Modern English Literature.
Final Exam Information

  1. The exam will consist of questions taken from the reading questions for each reading assignment.
  2. I will give you a set of questions for each reading, and you will be asked to answer only a certain number of them.
  3. You must answer each questions with a complete and grammatically correct sentence. Each question will be worth 3 points.
  4. Provide specific examples or facts where required.
  5. Your answers should not be longer than 1-2 sentences, depending on the question.
  6. In this exam you will also be required to write an essay of 250-300 words. Below are four essay topics. I will select two of these topics for the exam, and you will select one of the two for the essay.
    1. At the end of the story Johhny in "The Apostate" decides to leave his job, the town, and his family. He is aboout 16 years old now. Discuss how you think he came to this decision, althogh his entire family depended on him for support, and do you think his is justified in leaving. Defend your answer.
    2. Write an essay on the topic of women in unfulfilling marriage in "The Story of an Hour" and "The Chrysanthemums". How is their marriage unfulfilling? Is it unfulfilling through their husband's doing or their own doing.
    3. Discuss how the blacks in the stories "The Ethics of Living Jim Crow" and "Cora Unashamed" learn to live being dominated by the whites in the segregated society of America. Provide specific examples.
    4. What is Willy Loman's fatalf law in "Death os a Salesman"? What are all his major faults? How do they contribute to his downfall?
  7. Bring your own blank paper (tabak) to the exam.
  8. I suggest that you read all of the reading assignments that you have not already read and go through the reading questions carefully.
  9. Although I encourage you to study for the exam in groups, keep in mind that you still must have read all of the assigned works on your own. It may happen that someone might give you wrong answers during study sessions.
