AJK203. Survey of English Literature. Middle Ages to Romanticism
Final Exam Information

  1. The exam will consist of questions taken from the reading questions for each reading assignment.
  2. I will give you a set of questions for each reading, and you will be asked to answer only a certain number of them.
  3. You must answer each questions with a complete and grammatically correct sentence. Each question will be worth 3 points.
  4. Provide specific examples or facts where required.
  5. Your answers should not be longer than 1-2 sentences, depending on the question.
  6. You will need to bring a copy of the assigned poems to the exam. The only acceptable copy is the one listed in Moodle. Click here to access and print out the poems. Please make sure that you bring your own copy to the exam. You may not borrow someone else's copy during the exam. Pope's "Epistle" is NOT included in the set of poems and you may not bring a copy of that poem.
  7. In this exam you will also be required to write an essay of 250-300 words. Below are four essay topics. I will select two of these topics for the exam, and you will select one of the two for the essay.
    1. At the end of the poem, the Green Knight declares that Gawain is the best of all Arthurian knights. Explain the symbolic significance of Sir Gawain's shield and discuss how well Gawain measures up to the expectations suggested by the symbolism of the shield. How does he fulfill the duties of a perfect knight? PROVIDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM THE TEXT.
    2. In Shakespeare's play "As You Like It" there are four pairs of lovers in the play. Characterize each couple and discuss the concept of love that they represent.
    3. What does the term "social contract" mean? How was it viewed differently by Hobbes, Spinoza and Locke?
    4. What are some of the most important things that Romanticism emphasizes? What was the Romantic view of nature and the primitive, the role of Imagination, and some characteristics of the "Romantic Hero"?
  8. Bring your own blank paper (tabak) to the exam.
  9. I suggest that you read all of the reading assignments that you have not already read and go through the reading questions carefully.
  10. Although I encourage you to study for the exam in groups, keep in mind that you still must have read all of the assigned works on your own. It may happen that someone might give you wrong answers during study sessions.
