Goncharova, N. S. "Archangel Michael". 1914

Notes: The Archangel Michael, sheet from the album "The Mystical Images of the War," V. N. Kashin Publishers, Moscow Inspired by the turmoil of the period, this powerful lithograph exemplifies Goncharova's Neoprimitivist style, which combined elements of popular Russian art with those of ancient icon painting, seen here in the strong diagonals and simplified forms. "The Archangel Michael" also explicitly refers to the well known fourteenth-century icon of "St. George and the Dragon."
