Deineka, A. A. "Defense of Sebastopol". 1942

Notes: The Defense of Sebastopol. This composition pays homage to the defenders of Sebastopol, a Ukrainian port on the southern shore of Akhtiarskaya Bay on the Black Sea. During the Crimean war, from October 1854 to September 1855, the Anglo-French armies laid siege to the town. For a month, from June to July 1942, this town, then a Russian naval base, was again brutally attacked, this time by the Germans who reduced it to rubble. Thousands died, and Deineka's memorial to the brave Russians who tried to protect it was painted shortly afterwards.
