Chagall, M. Z. "Outing". 1917

Notes: Outing. "Outing," also titled "Promenade," is a major canvas by Marc Chagall, depicting an utterly impossible scene which celebrates the transforming ecstasy of love. Literally a 'flight of fancy,' the painting shows Bella Chagall floating above her husband, who holds her with his outstretched left arm; it proclaims that happiness makes all things possible. The landscape, more than a passive foil for such mystical freedom, heightens the sense of ecstasy with its lively, fragmented planes derived from Cubism.
