Notes: Landscape with a Black Horse
Executed in an archaizing style derived from Cubism and Russian folk art and somewhat reminiscent of early works by Chagall, "Landscape with a Black Horse" (1976) illustrates Zaven Arshankuni's considerable talent as a colorist. Here, as in his other works, he uses color to accentuate and model his figures. Though this picture was executed in oil paints, Arshankuni also worked with pastels and water colors.
