Repin, I. E. "Raising of Jair's Daughter". 1871

Notes: The Raising of Jair's Daughter Painted for an Academy competition on a Gospel theme, "The Raising of Jair's Daughter" won a gold medal and a travel scholarship for Ilya Repin in 1871. The subject treatment of this impressive early canvas (based on Matthew IX: 23-25; Mark V: 39-42; Luke VIII: 51-55) certainly owed much to Ivanov's "Christ Presented to the People," while its painterly qualities can be traced back to more distant artistic predecessors such as Rembrandt.
