This image of a crafty, good natured peasant may constitute Kramskoi's answer to the Wanderers' search for new heroic models during the uncertain times of the 1870s, when grave questions arose concerning the Empire's future. The artist's respectful portrayal of this weathered man shows no hint of pity or condescension.
