This double portrait of sister and brother Olga Ivanovna and Fiodor Ivanovich Zherbin shows the poignant self-absorption that characterizes the best of Pavel Fedotov's work. It seems as if his sitters, despite their relaxed poses, are weighed down by serious concerns which will never permit full joy.
