Nadezhda Petrovna Zhdanovich is posed in performance, but her expression suggests that her mind is far from the music. The empty wall behind the young woman and her pianoforte focus the viewer's attention on her physiognomy. The painter used cool color harmonies to enhance the sitter's sense of melancholy.
