Notes: Calm After the Storm
This dramatic, almost symbolist, landscape, painted from a study done on a trip to the Baltic shore, has been in the Russian Museum since 1897. It is a powerful image, memorable for its representation of light and mood. The force of the composition derives not only from the glowing mass of storm clouds, the work's most prominent feature, but also from the subtle lower passages. There, a distant boat glides through the water, leaving an almost imperceptible wake as it moves toward the shore, which is illuminated by the rays of a setting sun. The strength and silence of the painting recall Isaac Levitan's canvases of this same period (see ImageBase).
